Getting To The Bottom of Bottom Brackets

Bottom bracket quality varies enormously, with cheaper options obviously made from poorer materials, or not constructed as well. By buying a trusted brand bike you can be more confident that your bottom bracket is of a better quality.

The whole purpose of a bottom bracket is to connect the bike to the crank-set. For this reason, bottom brackets are found in the bottom bracket shell below the seat tube.

The outer housing of bottom brackets fits nicely into the bottom bracket shell and an axle (or spindle) spins freely inside the housing. In order to achieve free-motion spinning that cycling of course requires, ball bearings are used.

The sprocket or chain rings are attached to the crank then slotted onto the spindle for the complete pedal assembly.
