Cycling Destinations New Zealand

New Zealand has a reputation around the world as one of the most pristine, stunning destinations on Earth. We don’t need to be told – we know how beautiful our backyard is, and we know that bike riding is one of the best ways to appreciate all its glory.

So with the abundance of choice, what are some of the top destinations to take your two wheels for a bike tour?

Queenstown

We all know Queenstown is the place to be in Winter… But when some of that snow has melted and the dirt tracks are exposed, then you’d be hard pressed to find more furiously paced, technically challenging, visually spectacular downhill and gravity bike riding. Get on it!

Rotorua

If you’re in a mountain biking group and there’s a few different levels of expertise across the bunch, Rotorua is a quality spot for everyone. The famous 18 lakes, the stunning forest, the excellent mountain bike tracks, the camaraderie through MBT culture – Rotorua has it all.

New Zealand Rail Trail

From Wellington to Wairarapa, Christchurch to Little River, and Central Otago, this Government initiative sees crest trails stretch and criss-cross the country, offering riders all sorts of cycling distances, levels of ability and scenery. The rail trail is New Zealand on a platter!

Nelson

Located on the Eastern shores of Tasman Bay and considered one of the country’s sunniest regions, Nelson is home to beautiful long beaches, rugged mountains, pristine forests and even more sensational gravity and downhill riding. Boom!

Queen Charlotte National Park

The Queen Charlotte National Park stretches some 70kms from Ship Cove to Anakiwa, taking in spectacular mountain and water vistas along the way. This is the sort of riding destination you could split up across several days just to really enjoy everything on offer.

Heaphy Track

It’s always been known as one of our great walks, but Heaphy Track is fast developing a reputation as one of our great mountain bike riding paths as well. Wind 80km through dense forestland, limestone cliffs, palm groves and sandy beaches.

Christchurch

Port hills, Burwood Forest, Macleans Island - Christchurch has plenty to offer bike lovers, whether you want to stretch things out across several days or just make a single trip somewhere sensational.

Auckland

Woodhill has something like 100km of purpose-built mountain bike single trails with 250 man-made features. This is riding awesomeness for all levels (bike hire is available as well).

Wherever you go, you’re going to love spending time on your bike tour in or around New Zealand.
