Getting a Handle on Handlebar Info
The type of handlebar you use all depends on the type of riding you are doing.
Flat bars
Although used on a number of different bike types, most mountain bikes use flat bars. These vary in width as well as materials used, with alloy and carbon the most common.
Drop bars
Used on road bikes, these also vary in material, thus impacting the bike’s overall weight. The bar width varies as well – the general rule of thumb is to aim for bars that are about the same width as your shoulders.
BMX bars
These are reinforced with a brace bar for increased rigidity and strength due to the pressure a BMX rider usually places on the bike when performing tricks, stunts or dirt/race riding.
