About Road Bicycles

Road bicycles are perhaps the most popular type of bicycle. Road bikes are designed specifically with one thing in mind, SPEED. To achieve this road bikes have lightweight, aerodynamic frames, 700c wheels, drop down handlebars that force the rider into an aggressive aerodynamic riding position and usually an array of gears. The origin of road bikes can be traced back to the late 1600's but road cycling as a competitive sport really only gained traction in the 1800's. Road bikes have remained at the forefront of cycling technology since these times and remains to strive for ever faster, lighter and stronger bikes. Todays road bikes, particularly high end performance bikes feature the pinnacle of racing technology such as carbon fiber frames, rims, innovative gearing solutions and easy to use click in pedals.

Road bikes are particularly fragile when compared to other bicycles again due to their lightweight frame. The race/sport style road bike is by far the most popular type of road bike but there are several other road bicycle inspired bikes such as triathlon/time trial bikes, cyclocross bikes. fixie/track bikes and flat bar road bikes.
