La Vuelta Back Stage Pass - Numero Uno

August 24, 2015

It's a star studded start in Puerto Banús, just South-West of Marbella, where the Orica-GreenEDGE boys are warming up for Stage 1 of La Vuelta a España, the team time trial.

Ex-Superbike World Champion Carlos Checa is hanging about with Julian Dean looking like he is hoping to be cast as double for the dangerous stunts in the next series of Batman films.

We're excited to see Daryl Impey looking fresh and well recovered from early incidents in Le Tour; all-in-all the boys look pumped for a stage that they know they have a good chance of winning.

As they line up, in suitably epic fashion, Sandstorm by Darude (everybody's favourite trance number from the late 90's) builds to an overwhelming crescendo, Team OGE kicking into high gear as we are taken on a hectic ride through the tight bends along the beach front of Puerto Banús. We just can't get enough of that GoPro footage, showing us just how fast these guys go, and how close they take it to the wall on the bends.

With one km to go, Whitey's pushing the boys to the line with plenty of 'fruit n oats' thrown around - it was looking to be close.

And when it is that close at the line (within 1 second close), it's only natural that the team feels slightly disappointed. But third is a pretty good start to the tour! To top that, Cameron Meyer was awarded the most combative rider award, and Gerro was just stoked to have made it through after a particularly hairy moment, almost losing it transitioning to a rubber mat section. But he pulled it back in line and is looking strong heading into Stage 2.

Thanks Graham Watson for the awesome shot of OGE
