Uptown Funk - OricaGreenEDGE Fun

March 02, 2015

Back in 2012 it became a bit of a 'thing' for sport clubs to perform their own musical video of Carly Rae Jepsen's 'Call Me Maybe'. One of the most popular at the time was by the Miami Dolphin cheerleaders, and it was that version Dan Jones downloaded and showed to Orica-GreenEDGE just before they started stage 4 of the Tour of Spain.

After watching it, OGE's Sports Director Neil Stephens suggested they do their own version... And the Orica-GreenEDGE musical genius was unleashed.

The latest iteration of the team's side job in the music industry is Bruno Mars’s ‘Uptown Funk’, which Dan filmed in South Africa, where the team has been training.

Local rider and team member Daryl Impey has been declared by Dan as one of the group’s stand-out choreographers. Scenes of him with resort staff around the safari van show Daz bringing his absolute A-game. Commendable mentions have to go to Luke Durbridge, who looks like a natural in this kind of gig, and Michael Matthews, who’s showing some pretty schmicko taste in tropical print jackets.

Scenes have been shot at nearby Pilgrim’s Rest and Graskop and the locals got on board bigtime. The team would approach passers-by asking them if they’d like to be in a music video and, well, you can see for yourself how they reacted!

The clips have been an awesome way for the team to connect with fans and just have a bit of fun. The whole idea has started to take on a life of its own – the guys have been known to bust some of their music video moves on the podium. Raw talent right there.

And although the official word is that there are “no solid plans” for another music video in the near future, word on the street says that this year’s Tour de France will prove too much of a temptation for these groovers and shakers.
