Move over Eurovision, the Northern European country of Lithuania has a whole new reason to party today, with Ramunas Navardauskas becoming the first countryman to win a Stage of the Tour de France.

The Garmin Sharp rider was motivated by last week’s memories of his team mate, Kiwi Jack Bauer, who after leading as part of a duo for some 200km was pipped just at the post. Using his time trial skills, Navardauskas worked hard to keep ahead of a peloton that was closing in fast towards the finish line. But a crash just 3km out saw helped save Navardauskas’ bacon, with Cannondale and green jersey dominator Peter Sagan coming off. The road conditions were no doubt to blame – the day’s weather had been miserable and the surface was wet.

We look to tomorrow’s Individual Time Trial to really dice things up now – at this stage it looks like a foregone conclusion that Nibali will take yellow home to Italy.

Tomorrow's Individual Time Trial

Speculation about third – and possibly second – could keep conversations in the bunch ride pretty interesting, though.
