404 Firestrikes & Force CX1 - SRAM's Hot New Road Products

September 15, 2014

Heading into SRAM is like a kid going into a lolly shop! We made a bee-line for the 404 Fire Crest wheels and the SRAM Force CX1.

The Zipp 404 Firestrike Carbon Clincher has just launched to market and was shown first at Eurobike, where we got to check it out.

Its features include a new braking surface (almost like gills) for better wet weather stopping - a huge leap forward for carbon wheels that will no doubt go down a treat for those training in less than ideal conditions! There's also a new 'vortex shedding' pattern designed to help with wheel stability, a new hub set with ceramic bearings and no pre-load adjustment (pre-set at the factory for low-maintenance). Plenty to get excited about here.

We then take a look at the Force CX1, which was launched at this year's Cyclocross Championships after extensive testing.

It's married some of SRAM's best mountain bike technology with its best road bike technology for a purpose built, light, fast, tough, cyclocross group. SRAM's wide tooth/narrow tooth keeps the chain secure on the front ring, where there are plenty of options from a 38 tooth to 46 tooth (one buy upfront and great for easier mud clearance). For the rear cassette the Force CX1 can go up to 11-32, meaning you should have no problems getting through anything the cyclocross course throws at you. Braking is available either mechanical or hydraulic.
